In 2001 Viña De Martino harvested its first organically grown wine grapes. The decision to go organic was made based on several factors, the first of which was our respect for the environment and our desire to care for nature in order to continue to obtain high quality fruit in the future. Due to Chile’s characteristically dry summer seasons and the nearly complete absence of plant disease, we made the final decision and in 1998 we began the transition from conventional to organic agriculture. After completion of the obligatory three-year transition period we obtained our organic certification from the German company BCS Öko-Garantie GMBH and began to export our first De Martino red wines made from organically grown grapes, which consisted primarily of a Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec blend. Today we also produce a Sauvignon Blanc in the same line.
