Winemaker, Kevin Arnold, became a shareholder of the
company and had established a reputation as one of South Africa's
leading winemakers during his tenure at Rust en Vrede. He identified the
property and planned the building of a new winery as well as the
redevelopment of the vineyards and orchards. No expense has been spared
with the installation of the state of the art cuverie.
The goal
of Waterford is to create the best red wine in South Africa with the
quality and character standing up to the top red wines of the world. The
varieties planted under the watchful eye of vineyard manager Lombard
Loubser include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc,
Mourvedre, Barbera, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Sangiovesi.
Existing
vineyards include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
which are all between 12 and 14 years old. Future plantings will include
Tempranillo and Grenache.
