Courage, Tolerance, Love and Hope … The Pathways to Peace
Archbishop Desmond (Mpilo) Tutu is a name that will be forever synonymous with the very notion of human good and the continual struggle for peace around the world. Early in his life he formed a simple belief; that within every human there resides a basic good.
He dared to dream of a world committed to peace. A world in which everyone lives together as a family, everyone is loved, heard, cared for and unique. A world in which everyone matters and the essential good in everyone is manifested.
Since then his great moral courage during the conflicts of Apartheid in South Africa, his subsequent work as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and his success with other peace building activities have been widely acknowledged. In recognition of the pivotal role he has played in the betterment of our world’s history he has received, among other notable awards, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism in 1986, the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
